Quoting faster without cutting corners: estimation in field service and trades.

The usual trade off is speed against accuracy: quote fast and risk getting it wrong, or quote carefully and lose the job to whoever answered first. In estimating specifically, 2026's data shows that trade off has mostly closed.

What the current numbers show

A February 2026 independent test of six AI construction estimating platforms found error rates of 1.8% to 4% across complex, multi-discipline projects, against the 5% to 10% typical of manual spreadsheet takeoffs. A peer reviewed 2025 study found AI-assisted estimating improved accuracy by 20.4% and cut completion time by 51.3% compared to traditional methods.

Why the market is moving this fast

Quote validity windows are shrinking, from 30 to 60 days down to 7 to 15 days in some material markets, because suppliers now reprice biweekly rather than quarterly. A slow quote is not just a lost job. It is a quote built on numbers that may already be stale by the time the client reads it.

Where the estimator still matters

An estimation agent drafts job estimates from similar past work, materials and labour. Estimators review rather than retype. The job does not disappear, it changes shape: less time spent on the first pass, more time spent on judgement calls that actually need a person, the parts a model has no visibility into.

Faster to price, steadier margins. That is what a quoting agent built on your own history and price lists is actually for, not replacing the estimator, giving them a draft worth starting from.
